Learning Mode — No Live Odds

Learn how to divide a bonus bet and an opposing cash hedge to produce a similar result regardless of which side wins.

What do these terms mean?

Dutching

Dividing money across opposing outcomes so the final result is approximately equal regardless of which outcome wins.

Bonus bet

A promotional wager provided by a sportsbook. In this calculator, the bonus stake is not returned when the bonus bet wins.

Bonus-bet side

The outcome where the promotional bonus bet is placed. Longer positive odds usually create a higher potential conversion.

Hedge bet

A cash wager placed on the opposing outcome. It protects the result when the bonus bet loses.

American odds

Odds written as a positive or negative number. For example, +700 means a $100 winning cash wager would produce $700 of profit. Odds of -690 mean a bettor would normally risk $690 to produce $100 of profit.

Estimated locked result

The estimated result after considering both the bonus-bet outcome and the hedge-bet outcome. It assumes the odds remain available and both wagers are accepted.

Conversion rating

The estimated locked result divided by the original bonus-bet amount. For example, an $88.61 result from a $100 bonus bet equals an 88.61% conversion rating.

Estimated result ÷ bonus amount

The hedge stake is not the amount you expect to lose. It is the cash required to cover the opposing result — the winning hedge wager returns both its profit and its original cash stake.

The two results may differ by one cent after display rounding — calculations use unrounded values internally.

Why does this work?

A stake-not-returned bonus bet has promotional value but is not the same as cash. Placing it on the longer-odds outcome creates a larger potential bonus profit. A separate cash hedge covers the opposing outcome. The calculator adjusts the hedge amount until the estimated result on both sides is approximately equal.

What should I check before betting?

  • The two selections must represent genuinely opposing outcomes.
  • Confirm that both sportsbooks grade the market using compatible rules.
  • Confirm that the bonus bet is stake-not-returned.
  • Check maximum stakes and payout limits.
  • Recalculate if either set of odds changes.
  • Place the more difficult or limited wager first.
  • Never describe the result as guaranteed when odds, limits or market rules have not been confirmed.
