What form does the refund take?

Almost always stake-not-returned bonus bets, not cash. HedgeLock never treats bonus bets as equivalent to cash — their estimated convertible value is shown separately.

What is a first-bet-refund promotion?

"First bet up to $1,000 back if it loses" is first-bet insurance: your initial cash wager is refunded as stake-not-returned bonus bets when it loses. Unlike a bet-and-get, the reward only arrives on the losing branch — which changes the optimal strategy completely.

How the two-stage strategy works

Stage 1: bet a longshot at the promotional book (you want it to lose) and hedge the opposite side. The hedge is sized so the win-branch and the lose-plus-refund branch land near the same result. Stage 2: when the refund arrives, convert it like any bonus bet. This calculator optimizes the initial hedge across all three final outcomes — win, lose-then-bonus-wins, lose-then-hedge-wins.

Why the initial hedge differs from a normal qualifying hedge

A plain qualifying hedge balances two branches. Here, losing the first bet is partially compensated by the refund's future value, so the optimal hedge is smaller — you deliberately under-hedge the loss branch by the refund's conversion value. That's why this tool exists: eyeballing it leaves money on the table.

How refund caps affect the result

"Up to $1,000" means stakes above the cap are unprotected: a $1,500 first bet only ever gets $1,000 back. The calculator warns when part of your stake is outside the promotion's coverage.

Is this the right calculator?

Use it when your first real-money wager is protected if it loses and the refund arrives as bonus bets or site credit. Do not use it for bet-and-get offers, ordinary bonus bets, profit boosts, or cash-back offers with rollover requirements.
